The Hunger Games is based on the best-selling novel by Suzanne Collins. The story is about a 16-year old girl named Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is chosen to compete in a televised tournament with 24 other teenagers from a post-apocalyptic society. North America is not existent in the future; it turned into a place named Panem, instead. Panem is a divided nation split into 12 districts. Every year, each of the 12 districts selects both a boy and a girl teenager (they call them the "Tributes") to test their skill in the Hunger Games, a competition that is broadcast across the nation. When Katniss's younger sister is selected to be District 12's "Tribute," she volunteers to take her sisters place. Katniss trains under the former Hunger Games champion in order to sharpen her killer instincts.
