UPDATE: Taylor Swift (Valentine's Day, The Lorax) will join a growing cast of notables in The Giver. The 23-year old singer will play teenager Rosemary, who is the last to be mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas (Brenton Thwaites, who plays Prince Phillip in the upcoming Maleficient). Meryl Streep will play Chief Elder. Katie Holmes (Jack and Jill), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Odeya Rush (The Odd Life of Timothy Green), Cameron Monaghan (Prom), and Emma Tremblay round out the cast so far.
Nov. 7, 2012 - Salt director Phillip Noyce is in early talks to helm The Giver for producer and star Jeff Bridges, The Weinstein Company and Walden Media. Noyce also made the "Jack Ryan" action films Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games and recently directed a couple of episodes of the ABC TV show "Revenge."
June 28, 2011 - Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy) is trying to give the 1994 young adult novel "The Giver" its day on the big screen. The Newberry Medal winner by Lois Lowry has been in development as a movie repeatedly through the years but has yet to be made. Bridges and "Reading Rainbow" producer Nikki Silver acquired the rights and will make the movie with On Screen Entertainment.
"The Giver" is about a 12-year old who lives in a futuristic society where the human race has a peaceful existence with no memories beyond their own lives and current history. When the boy is about to be given the job as The Receiver, who shares the community's memories with one other person, he becomes disillusioned and horrified at the terrible secrets being kept.
Bridges will star in the title role. The book has sold more than 10 million copies.
