UPDATE: Star Trek 2 is now filming, Paramount Pictures announced today. The cast, according to the press release from Paramount Pictures, includes: John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and newbies Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller (see stories below). J.J. Abrams is directing and producing through his Bad Robot Productions as well as Skydance Productions. The script is by the other guy of "Lost:" Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Damon Lindelof. Star Trek 2 is scheduled to be one of summer 2013's big entries...it's set for release on May 17 of next year.
Jan 5, 2012: Scratch that whole "the villain must be Latino" thing. J.J. Abrams cast War Horse good guy Benedict Cumberbatch (yowza, that's quite a name!) to play the bad guy in Star Trek 2. Cumberbatch won a lot of fans in the U.K. by playing Sherlock Holmes in a TV series there. Cumberbatch is also currently starring in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and is the voice of Smaug in the upcoming The Hobbit.
Dec. 8, 2011 --Benecio Del Toro will not play the villain in Star Trek 2 after a deal could not be made. J.J. Abrams is now reportedly considering Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum) for the role; the actor will audition by Skype this week. Another actor being considered is Jordi Molla (Elizabeth: The Golden Age). Abrams seems bent on hiring a Latino actor and the belief is that it's for the role of Khan.
Dec. 5, 2011 - Peter Weller, the guy who played Robocop in the iconic movies, is joining the cast of Star Trek 2 in an undisclosed role. However, he does fit the description of what was believed to be the elder villain role.
Dec. 1, 2011 -- Alice Eve (She's Out of My League) and Benecio del Toro (The Wolfman) will join J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2 in undisclosed roles. What is believed is that Eve's character is new to the franchise and del Toro will play a villain. Eve's character may have an acc
ent: Eve is British and she won the role over fellow Brit Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Aussie Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four). One more major role is said to still be available, it's believed it's another, older villain.
Eve will next be seen in The Raven with John Cusack and del Toro's next film is Oliver Stone's star-studded Savages.
