Although we will have to wait until Friday for the opening Olympic ceremony, the women’s 2012 Olympic Soccer Tournament kicked off on Wednesday night in England. During the first night of the group stage the United States, Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, Brazil and North Korea all recorded wins.
Unfortunately the tournament began with a problem as the North Korean team delayed the kickoff for an hour because they were introduced with South Korean flags displayed next to their names and photos. The International Olympic committee apologized for their mistake, and after the delay North Korea was able to walk away with a win.
The United States embarked on their road to the gold medal by rallying back from an early two-goal deficit to finish ahead 4 goals to 2 over the highly touted French squad. The Americans feel they are the best team in the world right now and will have a chance to prove it after the advance out of the group stage.
