The 2012 London Summer Olympics have finally come to a close. We watched inspiring victories and surprising upsets in many different disciplines. Now the only thing left to do is count all of the medals!
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China excelled as the host country by winning 51 gold medals to beat the United States in gold medals; but the Americans still outmatched China in the overall medal count.
In this epic Olympiad China came out of the gate with a lead in both gold and overall medal count. However, disappointing performances in track and field events allowed the Americans to surpass China by 8 gold medals and 16 medals in the overall count. Great Britain also had an outstanding Olympics making good use of their home field advantage and winning 29 gold medals, third best in the gold medal count.
