A generation-long American classic, the “PB & J,” is proven to be one of the most popular snacks consumed by people all across the United States of every age. The famous white bread, creamy peanut butter, and sweet jelly sandwich may be a great tasting snack, but it lacks nutritional value; can be highly dangerous if eaten by, or around, someone who has a peanut allergy; and it contains lots of extra sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and a number of inorganic chemicals and pesticides. There are other alternatives that are healthier and tree-nut free for those allergic. They taste just as good, if not better, I promise!
More often than not, elementary schools ban their students from bringing anything that contains any type of tree-nut into the building. The number of people allergic to tree-nuts is high, so be safe, and check out these alternatives:
(Organic) Sunflower-Seed Butter: Tree Nut Free, and containing just half the calories as peanut butter, this tasty and extremely nutritious spread is one I recommend. Without extra preservatives and chemicals, organic sunflower butter contains nutrients that are beneficial to our bodies. Sunflower seed butter contains magnesium, which strengthens our bones and teeth. It is packed with vitamin B, which helps maintain a fast and healthy running metabolism. Although this butter has fat, for most brands, only 1 gram is Saturated Fat, and the total fat is much less than Peanut Butter.
(Organic) Almond Butter: Thicker and heavier than Peanut Butter, and extremely nutritious is Almond Butter. Instead of Saturated fats, almond butter is actually made of “monounsaturated” fats, which are actually good fats to eat. They benefit our hearts and cholesterol. The number one health benefit of almond butter is that it is good for the heart. Also in almond butter, there are a number of antioxidants like Vitamin E, that benefits our hearts.
Now, for the jelly. Jelly can be found in all different flavors. Some containing more sugar and chemicals than others. Fruit spreads are a great alternative. You can find low-sugar fruit spreads, made with no preservatives in the organic section of the supermarket. These spreads come in all textures, colors, and flavors, and are real jelly, instead of sugar, and jelly/fruit flavorings.
The white bread that holds the PB & J does not give our bodies the energy it needs for the day. Wheat or multigrain bread is a healthier option, with loads of protein and good-calories. The energy that wheat and grain bread give us is longer lasting than if we were to eat artificial white bread. White bread is bleached wheat bread, with no beneficial ingredients or good energy for our bodies.
There you have it. A few alternatives to the “PB & J” that are healthier, and in my opinion, tastier, than your average peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Make one for yourself... you won’t be disappointed!
