YouTube was the start for pop/rock band Wellington, but the internet wasn’t able to contain David, Jose, Troy, and Ricky. These four boys from across the globe are winning over fans left and right.
Now that they’re crossing the country on the Camplified tour, as well as performing some shows of their own, we just had to talk with Wellington. Check out the interview down below, and get some insight on one of the nation’s hottest new bands!
Fanlala: Have you ever been to camp before? What was it like?
David: Absolutely, I went to summer camp for eight years. It was awesome! I was a camper at a Jewish summer camp. My sisters have both gone to it, I played music all the time. And I made some lifelong friends there. It was the perfect place for a rambunctious, rebellious boy.
Troy: I went to football summer camp, I used to play the sport a lot. I remember this one big guy who had black hair. We called him Shamu. He chased us through the barracks. I also went to a regular camp that had things like archery, a lake. We got to play fun games. I was on Team Xami, and whichever team won the games got a t-shirt, and we won everything, all the games all the challenges.
Ricky: I never went to sleepaway summer camp, and I’m really upset that I missed out on the experience.
Jose: Nope, never.
F: If you could only bring three things to camp, what would they be?
D: My acoustic guitar, toothbrush, aaaaaand Gold Bond
J: My acoustic guitar, iPod, and I guess I would need an iPod charger.
R: Bongos, bug spray, and my mom’s meatballs.
T: an acoustic bass, skimpy trunks, very skimpy trunks, and a Chipotle gift card.
F: Do you know how to make a campfire?
R: My parents wouldn’t let me have matches. Back when I was very young, I burnt down my childhood swing set. I don’t know whether you would say that makes me very good with fire.
F: What would you rather cook on the campfire, smores or hot dogs?
J: hot dogs
R: hot dogs
T: I love chocolate... s’mores
D: hot dogs
F: Who are you excited to see perform at Camplified and what inspired you to do the tour?
Wellington: We’re excited to play with Rebecca McGown, and 3union was a lot of fun to play with.
R: Our manager is friends with the organizer of Camplified. We were doing our own shows on the east coast, and we got asked “Hey, do you wanna go to camp?” During the tour, we’ve been performing Camplified shows in between. It’s great exposure, and a lot of fun.
F: Where did the name “Wellington” come from?
R: When we were picking our band’s name, we went with my home town, which is Wellington. It’s the one we liked the most, so we went with Wellington!
And in case you were wondering, Troy is from Lake Arrowhead, David is from Seattle, and Jose from Lima, Peru.
F: What was it like working with writers and producers who have also worked with Hot Chelle Rae and One Direction for your upcoming EP?
W: It was a lot of fun. We’re fortunate to work with such established professionals. It’s pretty sweet working with people who have accomplished such great things.
T: It was cool working with the writers, who worked with them. Big Time Rush are our home dogs, we loved hanging out with them. We’ve hung out with Deftones, Carly Rae, tons of other people. It’s a real honor, and a lot of fun.
F: What was it like co-headlining the DigiTour?
W: Awesome
T: Oh my gosh, just being able to say headline, and having a really sweet tour bus, it was just really awesome.
J: Not a lot of the people attending knew us. They were completely new audiences. It really was the best thing ever, and we got some great responses.
D: We also helped out our friends who were headliners. We got to help artists like Destorm, Asher Monroe, we had a lot of fun just collaborating with everyone on the whole tour.
F: Which band would you love to open for and why?
J: All Time Low
T: Motley Crue
D: There’s no one in particular I have in mind.
R: If I could tour with Wellington. I would pick Fall Out Boy. Actually, a great tour would be Wellington, touring with Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, Motley Crue, and no one in particular!
F: What are your plans for the rest of 2012?
R: For the rest of the summer, we’re not on any specific tour. We have spot dates, a show with All Star Weekend, and we’ll just be playing as many shows through the rest of summer. We’re also working on finishing our EP.
W: We also will be performing a FREE show at the Universal Citywalk on August 29 for the Summer Music Spotlight. Other than that, we love to party, make music, and make fans. So that’s how we’ll be spending our summer!
We loved getting the chance to talk with the energetic boys of Wellington. You’ll be able to check them out at various Camplified venues, and if you’re in Los Angeles tonight, you can find them at the Canyon Club in Agora Hills performing with All Star Weekend. Let us know if you plan on checking them out! You can also click to find Wellington on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter!
