Dylan's Lunchbox: What Milk to Buy

Dylan Richards

Milk is super important for our bodies, especially when we are growing up into strong teens. Milk contains lots of calcium, an important nutrient that builds strong bones and tissue in our bodies. Milk, though, can be fatty, infused with hormones and toxic chemicals, and unhealthy if we don’t choose the right carton.

Whole vs. Skim: Whole milk is not drained of any fats, and all of the fat is digested by us when we drink whole milk. Reduced fat milk such as 2% is a good option because it contains way less fat than whole milk. Even better is skim milk, containing no fat at all but still the calcium and nutrients to benefit our bones and teeth.

Organic vs. Inorganic: Did you know that inorganic milk is filled with chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, and hormones? The inorganic hormones that these cows are fed are then consumed by us, when we drink inorganic milk. Organic milk contains no preservatives, chemicals, pesticides and hormones.

Lactose-Free: For those of us allergic to lactose, there are other options for you! Brands such as “Lactaid” produce milk for those of us who cannot eat lactose. It tastes great, if not better than regular milk!

Soy Milk: Soy Milk is a popular option aside from regular milk. Soy milk is made from soybeans, usually 100% natural. Soy milk is packed with iron, protein, and fiber to help our bodies run properly and smoothly. Soy milk can be high in sugar though, so make sure you are careful when selecting which soy milk you purchase. Chocolate soy milk, in my opinion, is even better than regular chocolate milk. Give it a try!

Remember:
-Organic milk over inorganic milk
-Skim or 2% milk over whole milk
-Soy milk is packed with protein, iron, and fiber
-Lactose free milk is easy to find and can be even healthier and more beneficial than regular milk!
