“American Idol” is a show that lets singers compete to be the best singer in the country! The show holds auditions all over the U.S. and week after week narrows down the contestants until, eventually, with America’s votes and the help of a group of judges, an American Idol is crowned. The show’s contestants are all between 15-28 years old and compete for the opportunity to expose their talent to national audiences and, also, potentially win a recording contract!
The idea for “American Idol” came from a British reality TV competition called “Pop Idol.”
The show has had three judges for every season, except the eighth season when there were four: Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. Paula left after the eighth season.
“American Idol” has produced such singing sensations as Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Kris Allen, and Lee DeWyze
The show premiered on June 11, 2002 and has become one of the most popular shows in the history of American television.
